Okuma Scorpio SP5000-A: High-Performance Design Meets Striking Aesthetics

At Gerrys Fishing, the Okuma Scorpio SP5000-A stands out as one of the most visually impressive and technically sound reels in its price bracket. Finished in an exclusive metallic black and purple paint job, it isnt just about looksits built for serious durability. The 5000 size is the heavy-hitter of the series, offering a larger spool and higher drag capacity for anglers who need extra muscle for larger predators or heavier lure work.

A key highlight is the Cyclonic Flow Rotor (CFR) technology. This design creates a cyclonic airflow that significantly increases air circulation around the rotor. If the reel gets wet, it dries much faster, which drastically reduces the chance of internal corrosion. Combined with the Precision Elliptical Gearing System, this reel provides a level of smoothness and longevity usually reserved for more expensive models.

Technical Specifications

The SP5000-A is a robust, larger-capacity spinning reel designed for versatile predator fishing:

Advanced Performance Features

• Cyclonic Flow Rotor (CFR): Increases airflow through the ported rotor, minimizing moisture buildup and preventing corrosion.

• Precision Elliptical Gearing: Reduces friction during casting for better distance and accuracy, while providing more uniform drag pressure during the fight.

• Dual Spool Package: Comes with a premium machine-cut aluminum spool for your main line (ideal for braid) and a graphite spare spool for a back-up mono option.

• Quick-Set Anti-Reverse: Eliminates back-play in the handle for rock-solid, jaw-shattering hook sets.

• Even Flow Line Roller: Minimizes line twist by allowing the line to roll freely over the roller without friction, essential for maintaining the health of your braid.

Where to Use the Scorpio SP5000-A

The 5000 size is a powerful all-rounder for several demanding UK styles:

• Heavy Lure Fishing for Pike: The 8kg drag and 5.0:1 gear ratio provide the torque needed to work large soft plastics or heavy crankbaits and handle aggressive Pike in weedy water.

• Salmon Spinning: Ideal for the river angler who needs a reel with enough line capacity and drag smoothness to handle a fresh-run Salmon in a fast current.

• Inshore Saltwater Spinning: Perfect for targeting Bass and Pollack from the shore or boat. The CFR technology is a massive advantage in saltwater, ensuring the reel stays in top condition despite the salt spray.

• Heavy Feeder Fishing: In freshwater, the 5000 size is excellent for large-scale feeder work on big rivers or when casting long distances on large stillwaters for Bream and Tench.

Gerrys Pro Tip: The Scorpio SP5000-A is surprisingly light for its size at just 288g. This allows you to step up to a larger spool capacity without making your setup feel bottom-heavy, making it a great match for modern, lightweight 9ft or 10ft lure rods.
