At Gerrys Fishing, weve seen the evolution of the continental rod from a niche lightweight tool to the powerhouse monsters they are today. Standing at the very top of that mountain is the Akios Airpower 435 SRS Black Edition. Known affectionately as The 3-Piece Beast, this rod quickly achieved cult status upon its initial release in 2018. This new Black Edition takes that legendary performance and wraps it in a stunning, high-performance nano-carbon shell.
What makes the Airpower SRS different from its siblings is the Sliding Reel Seat (SRS). While most continental rods force you into a fixed-reel position, the SRS model allows you to slide the screw-lock reel seat to your exact preferred height. Whether you want to fish reel-up for maximum casting leverage or reel-down for comfort in the surf, this rod adapts to you. Pair that with the Fuji KWAG Alconite guides, and you have a rod that is equally at home with a massive fixed spool or a high-speed multiplier.
The blank is a feat of engineering, utilizing a new grade of nano-carbon for improved structural strength and a Spyrowrap butt section. This specialized wrap prevents the rod from ovalling under the extreme pressure of an 8oz cast, ensuring every ounce of energy you put into the rod is transferred directly into the lead.
Despite its Beast moniker, this isnt a numb piece of carbon. The Airpower 435 SRS features a perfectly blended hybrid tip. This allows for the lightning-fast recovery needed for distance casting while maintaining exquisite bite registration. You can sit this rod in a tripod in a heavy swell and still distinguish between the pull of the tide and the tentative rattle of a specimen fish.
To ensure durability in the harshest salt environments, Akios has included Metal Band Reinforced Spigots and EVA Reel Seat Collars. These collars are a small but vital detail, preventing sand and grit from entering the sliding mechanism, ensuring your reel seat stays smooth and functional for years.

Deep Water Rock Marks: The 8oz casting rating and Spyrowrap butt section give you the winching power to pump large fish up through kelp and over ledges.
Extreme Distance Beach Casting: When the fish are holding 150+ yards out, the lightning-fast recovery of this blank will help you reach them.
Winter Cod & Heavy Tides: Perfectly suited for the Bristol Channel or the North East coast where heavy leads and large baits are non-negotiable.
Specimen Hunting: Ideal for targeting double-figure Rays, Smoothhounds, and Shore Conger where you need a rod that simply wont fold.
The Airpower SRS is a unique animal because it allows for total ergonomic customization. If you are using a multiplier, try sliding the reel seat down to about 10 inches from the buttthis low-mount style can often give you a much more stable platform for your thumb during a high-power cast. Also, dont be afraid to load this rod. While its rated for 48oz, the sweet spot is a 6oz lead with a large bait. The nano-carbon blank is designed to be pushed, so the more you give it, the more it gives back.
Does the sliding reel seat slip during the cast?
Not if tightened correctly. The Akios SRS system is a high-pressure screw lock. When paired with the provided EVA collars, it creates a very secure bond. We recommend a firm hand-tighten; there is no need to use tools.
What is the benefit of the Sure Grip System (SGS)?
If youve ever struggled to pull a 3-piece rod apart with wet, cold, or slimy hands, youll appreciate the SGS. It consists of textured zones near the joints that provide a non-slip surface, making dismantling the rod at the end of a session effortless.
Can I use light lines with such a powerful rod?
While you can, this rod is a Powerhouse. To get the best out of it, we recommend using a minimum of 15lb mono or 40lb braid with a heavy-duty tapered shock leader. The Fuji KWAG guides are specifically designed to handle the knots associated with heavy-duty casting.
Is the hybrid tip replaceable if damaged?
The hybrid tip is an integral part of the top sections construction to ensure a seamless action. While it is incredibly tough, like all carbon tips, it should be treated with care. If damaged, a replacement top section would be required to maintain the rods specific performance characteristics.
