At Gerrys Fishing, we recognize that some sessions require more than just standard gearthey require a reel that is fundamentally bulletproof. The Akios IRON-SPIN 50 is aptly named; it is a heavy-duty, high-performance spinning reel engineered for anglers who target hard-fighting species that test gear to the absolute breaking point. Whether you are casting heavy lures from the rocks or vertical jigging from a boat, the IRON-SPIN is designed to take the punishment and come back for more.
The standout feature of this reel is its incredible 25kg (55lb) Carbon Drag system. This is a massive amount of stopping power for a size 50 reel, providing the brakes needed to halt a charging specimen before it reaches the snags. Built with an alloy metal body and rotor, the IRON-SPIN offers a rigid, flex-free platform that ensures the gears remain perfectly aligned even when the reel is under extreme winching pressure.
Akios has addressed the common issue of braid slipping on the spool by including a rubber grip braid insert on both the deep and shallow aluminium spools. This allows you to load braid directly onto the spool without the need for monofilament backing, ensuring a rock-solid foundation under high tension.
Despite its rugged exterior, the internal mechanics are refined. With 8+1 stainless steel bearings, the retrieve is silky smooth. The 4.6:1 gear ratio is specifically chosen for torque; it provides 74cm of line recovery per turn, giving you the mechanical advantage needed to pump large fish up from the depths or through heavy surf.

Shore Lure Fishing: Ideal for throwing heavy metals or large soft plastics for Bass and Pollack from rugged rock marks where you need to bully fish away from kelp.
Light Boat Jigging: A fantastic choice for inshore boat work, targeting Smoothhounds, Rays, and mid-sized Tope.
Heavy Freshwater Predators: The 25kg drag makes this an excellent cross-over reel for specimen Pike or even European Catfish.
Saltwater Spinning: Perfect for the traveling angler targeting hard-hitting species like Jacks or smaller Tuna where a reliable drag is non-negotiable.
The rubber grip insert on the IRON-SPIN spools is a game-changer, but to get the best performance, ensure you wind your braid on under significant tension the first time. This prevents the line from bedding in during a heavy fight. Also, because this reel has such a high drag rating (25kg), remember that your rod and line will likely reach their breaking point before the reel doesalways set your drag to a sensible level for your specific lines breaking strain before your first cast!
Is this reel fully saltwater resistant?
The IRON-SPIN features an alloy body and stainless steel bearings designed for marine environments. However, to maintain the as-new smoothness of the 8+1 bearing system, we always recommend a quick rinse with fresh water after every salty session to prevent salt crystal buildup.
Why a 4.6:1 ratio instead of a faster one?
In heavy-duty fishing, torque is often more important than speed. The 4.6:1 ratio acts like a low gear in a truck; it makes it much easier to winch a heavy fish or a high-resistance lure against a strong tide without the reel feeling laboured.
Does it come with a spare spool?
Yes. The IRON-SPIN 50 is supplied with two aluminium spools: a shallow braid-optimized spool and a deeper spool for higher line capacity or thicker monofilament. Both feature the rubber anti-slip insert.
Can the handle be switched to the other side?
Yes, the CNC machined power handle can be easily swapped for either left or right-hand retrieve, depending on your preference.
