At Gerrys Fishing, we often see anglers looking for that perfect balance between brute strength and compact agility. The Akios Shuttle 555 STR Kuro is exactly that reel. While many distance-seekers gravitate toward the larger 656 or 666 models, the 555 is the stealthy compact powerhouse of the range. It offers the same top-tier internals as its bigger brothers but in a smaller, lighter frame that feels incredibly balanced on modern, lightweight high-modulus rods.
The STR (Stainless Tough Reel) designation means business. By upgrading the standard brass gear train to extra-tough 5.3:1 stainless steel gears, Akios has created a reel that is virtually bulletproof under load. To prevent this added strength from making the reel heavy, the Kuro edition features lightweight anodized aluminium side plates, stripping nearly 100g off the total weight. This reduction is vital for flick casting and generating explosive rod tip speed, which is the secret to hitting those extra yards on the beach.
Control is where the Shuttle series truly shines. The 555 STR Kuro utilizes a free-floating spool system supported by two ABEC 5 stainless steel bearings, allowing for an ultra-smooth, high-RPM spin. To tame that speed, it employs a dual braking system:
Internal Centrifugal Blocks: These provide a consistent safety net, preventing overruns at the start of the cast when energy is at its peak.
External Long-Knobby Mag: This allows for precise in-cast adjustments. You can dial the magnetic braking up or down mid-flight to account for shifting winds or to open it up as the lead reaches its apex.

Clean Ground Match Fishing: The 555 is the ultimate match reel for clean sandy beaches where you want a fast, light setup for targeting Flatfish, Bass, and Whiting.
Light Rough Ground: Dont let the size fool you; the stainless steel gears have the grunt to winch fish through light kelp and over shingle banks.
Estuary & Pier Work: Its compact profile makes it a joy to use in tight spots where long, sweeping casts arent always possible, but accuracy and control are paramount.
Light Uptiding: A fantastic choice for casting lighter leads away from the boat when targeting inshore species like Rays and School Bass.
The 555 STR Kuro is a thoroughbred casting machine. Because its so lightweight, its much easier to over-castmeaning you can move the rod through the air faster than with a heavier 656. My advice is to use a slightly higher viscosity oil in the ABEC 5 bearings for your first few sessions. This slows the spool down just enough to let you find your rhythm. Once youre comfortable, flush them and switch to a high-speed tournament oil to really see what this compact beast can do. Also, since it has no level-wind, practice laying your line in a slight V shape with your thumb on the retrieve for the smoothest release on the next cast.
Is the 555 too small for big fish?
Not at all. The 17.5lb carbon drag and stainless steel gears are the same strength as those found in the larger Shuttle models. The only difference is the line capacity. If you are targeting big fish at extreme range or in deep water, you might want the 666, but for 90% of UK shore fishing, the 555 has plenty of backbone.
What is the benefit of the One-Piece Cage?
Standard multipliers often use three-piece cages held together by screws. Under the massive torque of a power cast, these can flex, which causes the spool to rub or the gears to misalign. The One-Piece Solid Aluminium Cage on the Shuttle ensures total rigidity and perfect alignment every time.
Are stainless steel gears noisier than brass?
Because stainless steel is a harder metal, you may notice a slightly different mechanical sound on the retrieve compared to a softer brass gear. This is completely normal and is a sign of the incredible durability and winching power the STR range is famous for.
Is this reel left-handed?
The 555 is a right-hand wind reel. In the Akios range, the 6 or 5 at the end of the model number (e.g., 555, 656) generally denotes a right-hand wind. For left-handed models, you would look for the 1 designation (e.g., 651).
