The Hinged Stiff Rig is widely regarded as one of the most effective big fish presentations in the history of carp angling. However, its complex two-part construction and the precision required to tie the perfect D and curve can be daunting for many. At Gerrys Fishing, we are proud to offer the Korda Ready Tied Hinge Rig, a perfect replica of the setup used by Danny Fairbrass.
This rig is designed to provide the ultimate pop-up presentation. It combines a stiff, curved hook section with a semi-stiff fluorocarbon boom, creating a mechanical masterpiece that is almost impossible for a carp to eject. If you are targeting specimen fish and want the peace of mind that your rig is sitting perfectly for hours on end, this is the setup you need in your armory.
Dual-Component Mechanics: Features a hook section made from Mouthtrap (stiff filament) for an aggressive curve, and a boom section made from IQ Fluorocarbon to kick the bait away from the lead.
360-Degree Movement: The hinge created by the swivel connection allows the hook section to rotate and move independently, ensuring the hook can spin and find a hold in the bottom lip regardless of the angle of approach.
Anti-Tangle & Resetting: The stiff IQ boom ensures that the rig stays away from the lead during the cast. If a fish or bird disturbs the bait without being hooked, the stiffness of the materials causes the rig to reset itself to its prime position.
Expertly Curved: Each hook section is professionally curved to Danny Fairbrass exacting standards, providing the perfect claw shape that is the hallmark of a successful hinge rig.
Premium Hardware: Tied using ultra-sharp Korda Choddy hooks and high-quality swivels for maximum reliability during the fight.

Targeting Specimen Carp: The Hinge Rig is a selective rig. Because of its size and stiffness, it often ignores smaller nuisance fish and waits for a larger carp to suck it in with enough force to engage the mechanics.
Fishing Over Clean Gravel or Sand: The IQ fluorocarbon boom is virtually invisible in clear water, making it perfect for hard, clean lake beds where stealth is a priority.
High-Attraction Pop-up Fishing: Ideal for bright single pop-ups or fishing over a bed of boilies. The rig keeps the bait sitting roughly 2 inches off the deck, making it highly visible and accessible.
Long-Range Casting: The inherent stiffness of the Hinge Rig makes it one of the most tangle-proof rigs available. It can be cast to the horizon with total confidence that it wont frap up around the lead.
The Critically Balanced Secret:
The performance of a Hinge Rig relies entirely on how the pop-up sits. You want the hook to sit upright, but you dont want the bait to be too buoyant. Use a small amount of Korda Dark Matter Putty around the swivel that connects the Mouthtrap to the IQ boom. Add just enough so that the rig sinks slowly to the bottom. This critical balance makes it much easier for the fish to suck the hook into its mouth, resulting in faster takes and better hook-holds!
Why choose a Hinge Rig over a Chod Rig?
While both use a stiff hook section, the Hinge Rig features a longer boom. This makes it better suited for fishing on cleaner lake beds or over a spread of bait, whereas the Chod Rig is specifically designed for fishing over heavy chod or weed.
What size pop-up should I use?
For the Size 4 rig, a 15mm or 18mm pop-up is ideal. For Size 6, a 14mm-15mm bait works perfectly. If you are using the Size 8 for a more finesse approach, a 12mm pop-up is the best match to ensure the rig isnt over-buoyant.
Can I change the hook on this rig?
Unlike the Multi Rig, the hook on a Hinge Rig is tied with a knot (usually a knotless knot or a Chod-loop). To change the hook, you would need to tie a new Mouthtrap section. However, the IQ boom can often be reused if it is still in good condition.
Does the fluorocarbon boom stay straight?
Yes, but if it gets a slight kink after a fish, simply hold it under tension and pass it through the steam of a kettle for a few seconds. This will reset the IQ fluorocarbon to its original, pin-straight profile.
