PENN Rival Long Cast Gold Reels

An In-Depth Look at the PENN Rival Long Cast Gold Reel

The PENN Rival Long Cast Gold is a fixed spool reel designed to be a versatile and accessible workhorse for the UK shore angler. PENN has engineered this reel to specifically fulfill the criteria of the UK surf angler while maintaining an affordable price point. Its a reel that focuses on long-range casting performance, durability, and smooth operation, making it a great choice for a wide range of beach fishing scenarios. Its available in three main sizes: 6000, 7000, and 8000, with the larger models being most popular for surfcasting.

Core Specifications and Technology

• Lightweight and Robust Construction: The reel is built with a graphite body and rotor. This material is a perfect choice for an affordable saltwater reel as it provides a good balance of strength and low weight. The reel is designed to be saltwater resistant, with sealed components to protect against the corrosive effects of the sea.
• Forged Long Stroke Aluminium Spool: A key feature of the Rival Long Cast Gold is its forged and machined long-stroke aluminium spool. The long-stroke design allows line to be laid in a way that minimizes friction during the cast, helping to achieve impressive casting distances. The spool is also braid ready, meaning it has a rubber inlay that prevents braided line from slipping without the need for mono backing.
• Smooth and Powerful Drag: The reel is equipped with a strong and smooth front drag system with a maximum drag force of 8kg (17.6lbs). This provides ample stopping power for a variety of UK species like cod, bass, and smooth-hounds. The Quick-set drag system allows for rapid adjustments, giving you instant control over a running fish.
• Reliable Bearings and Gearing: The Rival Long Cast Gold is built with a 4+1 sealed stainless steel ball bearing system. The sealed bearings are crucial for a saltwater reel as they provide excellent corrosion resistance and ensure a smooth retrieve. The reels gear ratios vary by model, with the 8000 size having a 4.3:1 ratio and the 6000/7000 having a 4.8:1/4.3:1 ratio. These ratios are perfect for a surf reel, providing a good balance of winding power to retrieve heavy leads and a fast enough retrieve rate to get the line in efficiently.
• User-Friendly Features: The reel features a machined one-touch screw-in handle with a comfortable T-shaped knob. The screw-in handle provides a solid and direct feel when retrieving, eliminating any movement or twist. A manual bail arm is also a key feature for long-distance casting, as it prevents the bail arm from snapping shut mid-cast and causing a crack-off.

Why Its Perfect for UK Fishing

The PENN Rival Long Cast Gold is an excellent choice for the UK angler due to its combination of tailored features, durability, and a highly accessible price point.

1. Ideal for Long-Range Casting: The reels design, including the long-stroke spool and a good line lay, makes it well-suited for casting to distance on large, open beaches. This is often the key to success in UK surfcasting, as it allows you to reach feeding fish in gullies and sandbars that are out of range for standard reels.
2. Built to Withstand UK Conditions: The saltwater-resistant graphite body and sealed bearings mean this reel can handle the tough conditions of UK fishing, from abrasive sand to corrosive salt spray. This ensures it will provide reliable performance for many seasons.
3. Powerful and Reliable: The strong 8kg drag is more than capable of handling a wide range of UK species. The robust internal components mean the reel can handle the stress of winching in heavy leads and fighting a strong fish.
4. Exceptional Value: The PENN Rival Long Cast Gold provides a suite of essential features for serious surf fishing at a very competitive price. Its a great entry point for anglers looking to get into long-range surfcasting without a significant financial outlay.
